Halo teman-teman, kali ini saya akan sharing mengenai materi Bahasa Inggris Collective Nouns. berikut adalah penjelasannya. semoga membantu ^-^

Collective Noun adalah nama yang digunakan untuk sekumpulan orang, hewan atau benda yang kita kelompokkan dan kita sebut sebagai satu unit utuh yang mewakili bagian-bagiannya. Contoh: a bunch of bananas, a litter of puppies, a flock of sheep, dan lainnya. Semua contoh tersebut dilihat sebagai satu unit, seperti segerombolan domba, kita tidak menghitung jumlah dombanya, tapi kita lihat secara keseluruhan yaitu segerombolan domba (a flock of sheep).
Pembahasan Collective Nouns ini terkait dengan topik Subject-Verb Agreement. Collective Nouns jika dianggap/dilihat sebagai satu unit utuh, maka kata kerja yang digunakan adalah singular. Jika dipandang sebagai/secara terpisah masing-masing anggotanya, maka sudah tidak lagi dianggap sebagai satu unit utuh, maka kata kerja yang digunakan adalah plural. Perhatikan contoh singkat berikut untuk memperjelas pemahaman atas hubungan Collective Nouns dengan kata kerja Singular dan Plural:

• The family is planning an overseas trip. (Dalam kalimat ini, kata family dianggap/dipandang sebagai satu unit utuh, sehingga kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja singular is.)
• The family are discussing about the plan. (Dalam kalimat ini, family digunakan untuk mewakili kata the family members/ anggota keluarga, untuk itu, kata family tidak lagi dianggap/dipandang sebagai satu unit utuh, tapi lebih pada keterlibatan para anggotanya dalam diskusi tersebut.)

Ada banyak sekali macam Collective Nouns. Kebanyakan Collective Nouns menggunakan istilah tertentu dan berbeda dalam pengelompokan unitnya. Misal, segerombolan ikan dan segerombolan domba, meskipun sama-sama menggunakan kata segerombolan, tetapi versi bahasa inggrisnya berbeda, yaitu: a school of fish (segerombolan ikan), dan a herd of sheep (segerombolan domba).
